DU observes Nat’l Flag Hoisting Day

Teachers, students and officials of Dhaka University (DU) observed the National Flag Hoisting Day on the campus on Saturday.
On this day in 1971, the country’s national flag was hoisted at the historical Bottola in front of Arts building on the DU campus for the first time.
Singing the national anthem, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the programme by hoisting the National Flag on the campus at around 11.00 am.
In his speech, DU VC Professor Akhtaruzzaman recalled the contribution made by DU students during the Liberation War.
“DU was the centre of all democratic movements and this is the place (Bottola) where the National Flag was hoisted for the first time,” he said.
He urged the DU students to uphold their glorious role in leading the country.
DU pro-VC (academic) Professor Nasreen Ahmed presided over the function, while Pro-VC (administrative) Professor Muhammad Samad, Treasurer Professor Kamal Uddin, Teachers Association’s President Professor A S M Maksud Kamal, General Secretary Professor Shibli Rubayet ul Islam and Proctor Professor A K M Golam Rabbani participated in a discussion moderated by History Department Teacher Sharmin Jahan Chowdhury.
The National Flag designed by Shib Narayan Das was hoisted by the then Vice-President of Dhaka University Students’ Union ASM Abdur Rab, (now President of one of the groups of ISD).
