DU Mourning Day observed

To mark the tragedy of Jagannath Hall, the Dhaka University (DU) authorities and different organisations observed mourning day on Saturday.
Teachers, students, officials and employees of the university led by Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique placed wreaths at October Smriti Stambha at Jagannath Hall.
Earlier, at 7:00 am a mourning procession was brought out on the campus from the ‘Aparajeyo Bangla’ that terminated at `October Smriti Stambha’ of the hall. The participants of the procession wore black badges.
To mark the day, the DU authorities arranged a discussion programme at Jagannath Hall auditorium.
DU VC Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique presided over the function, while DU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof M Aktaruzzaman, Member of Parliament Pankoj Nath, DU Teachers’ Association President Prof Fariduddin Ahmed, DU Alumni Association Vice-President Molla Abu Kawsar, its general secretary Ranjon Karmokar spoke among others.
DU Jagannath Hall Provost Prof Asim Sarkar delivered welcome speech and acting Registrar Enamuzzaman conducted the function.
On 15 October 1985, the roof of Assembly Building (now October Smriti Bhaban) collapsed that claimed 39 lives, including students and employees of the hall.
