The Dhaka University English Department has launched three new books at a ceremony on Sunday.
The new volumes are two textbooks, ‘Writing Essays with Ease’ and ‘Exploring Academic Writing’, and a collection of scholarly essays on World War I titled ‘The Great War and Our Mindscapes’.
The textbooks are part of a project funded by the British Council in partnership with the University of Manchester’s Institute of Education written by the department’s faculty members and aims to teach writing in English at the tertiary level. Chief Guest and Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof Abdul Mannan thanked the faculty for their hard work and dedication to the project.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (academic) Dr Nasrin Ahmed welcomed the production of such study tools for English students and British Council Deputy Director David Maynard encouraged the joint effort of the production and the need to sustain such projects. The books also received praise from Dr Fakrul Alam and Prof Sarwar Chowdhury for their utility to students at the tertiary level. ‘The Great War and Our Mindscapes’ was the result of a 2014 conference on World War I and its production was led by Prof Tahmina Ahmed. English Department Chairperson Dr Rubina Khan chaired the event, which was attended by students, teachers and well-wishers.
