DU holds seminar on religious peace-building

A daylong international seminar on “Making Pluralism Possible: The Promise and Challenge of Religious Peace-building in South Asia” was held on Saturday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of the Dhaka University (DU).
Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue (CIID) of DU, the Department of Economics and Social Sciences of BRAC University, Berkley Centre for Religion, Peace and World Affairs of Georgetown University and World Faiths Development Dialogue, USA jointly organized the event. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the seminar as chief guest.
Director of CIID Dr Fazrin Huda presided over the inaugural session while Professor of the Georgetown University, USA Katherine Marshall and Chairperson of the Department of Economics and Social Sciences of BRAC University Dr Mahabub Hossain, among others, addressed it.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Arefin Siddique stressed the need for inculcation the culture of dialogue among the followers of various faiths in order to foster congenial interreligious commitment in relation to spirituality. We should eliminate the exclusivist and reductionist proclivities toward other religions, he pointed out. He said, Bangladesh is a role model for interreligious and intercultural harmony.
“We all live in this country peacefully in environment of many different religions. Our state policy is secularism. Our constitutions guarantees equality to all citizens of the republic irrespective of faith, caste creed, color, economic, social, ideological or political status,” he added.
