Md Moniruzzaman :
The Dhaka University (DU) administration has lost their control over its dormitories to the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
DU Hall administration cannot control seat distribution, canteen management and giving punishment to the guilty.
The scenario of the Hall for female students of the university is quite difference. Girls Hall is much less than boys hall in student ratio. But, the seat crisis of girls Hall is not excessive as boy’s Hall for its administration’s activity.
A total of seven students had been suspended permanently from hall on account of inflicting torture and creating violence and three for six months.
But the all suspended students will stay in the Hall with the support of BCL. Hall administration could not expel out from the Hall.
Besides, when someone lodges complain with the Hall administration against torture and they cannot investigate and take action properly, the student cannot stay at the Hall.
Such an accident was happened on March at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall. The student named Abu Taleb submitted a complaint after torturing at Guestroom but the administration could not take action. Thereby he was not able to comeback to the Hall yet.
Moreover, when a new student come to the Hall, administration activists have limited in signing some paper and collecting adjacent fee and later issuing Hall ID card instead oftaking them to the Hall.
But BCL receives new students as activists of them and placed them in Gonoroom, where many students together live inhumanely and sometimes BCL fiction involves in clashes taking the students.
On Thursday, such clash erupted when the president and general secretary group of BCL Hall unit of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall trying to take a new students to their own group.
However, a total of around 150 BCL led Gano room where the first and second years students have to live and attend political programme for more than three hours per day as well as they are forced to sit in Guestroom account for their political activities.
“We are forced to attend various political programme even missing the classes. We have to stay in the hall, so I obey the rules of the BCL,” students said.
Students face guestroom torture, the strict step of BCL regions, for failing to attend political programme properly. But whenever a guestroom torture happened and journalists go to the Hall administration said, “I have not received any written complaint of its concern yet.”
On the other hand, students always express indifference to lodged complaint for failing to take proper action of its administration and afraid of farther torture and kick off the Hall.
“All of the regular students including first and second years have rights to stay at the Hall,” Prof Abdul Basir, provost of Bijoy Ekattor Hall said.
“Hall administration controls all. We publish notice applying for seat and those applied we provide seat after receiving viva. We have given 241 students seat recently,” he added.
A total of nine suspended students are still staying in the Hall. Asking in this regard, Prof Abdul Basir said “There are no expelled students in our hall. We accommodated students in those seats.”
“Everything will be happened under the management of the administration,” DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said.
“We have some limitation. Our students come from various remote areas. They have no efforts to stay in Dhaka City providing house rent and thereby they want to take some facilities from others,” he added.
“It would be great if we could give one seat to each student. Although we have many restrictions, the administration will always work to ensure that no one is harassed anywhere,” Akhtaruzzaman added.
