Md. Shamim, IDMVS, DU :
Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies (IDMVS) is the latest institute of Dhaka University (DU) which has been dispersing knowledge as a complete institute since 2012.
At present there are about 200 students studying in 4 individual batches at graduation level and many in post graduation level.
Prof Mahbuba Nasreen, PhD is currently working as the director of IDMVS.
The vision of this institute is to be a leading institution for academic excellence and innovations in disaster management in Asia and its mission is to build capacity through training and research for disaster management responsive to national and global needs.
During Rana plaza disaster the voluntary participation of IDMVS was highly commendable.
This institute is working to reduce the disaster impact on people as Bangladesh is facing vulnerability due to climate change.
IDMVS extends its helping hand in response to the disaster occurred outside the national border.
During Nepal earthquake, IDMVS in collaboration with Rotary club of Dhaka sent relief and emergency equipments for earthquake victims of Nepal.
The students of IDMVS are found spontaneous enough studying this new discipline. To them, this discipline is more practical than any other discipline, and one can get more opportunity to serve the country especially in case of disaster.
IDMVS students are reasonably enthusiatic to engage themselves in several disaster risk reducing activities. They attend in several phases of VSO (volunteer service overseas) programs with UK volunteers.
Most noticeable is that, IDMVS students, by their own effort, conduct a social action program namely Resilience to Disaster (RTD).
Under this program, they take part in several social events to build consciousness among the people especially among the school going children.
They have conducted a survey in 20 schools in order to provide initial training on urban disaster management among the students. Under this program, training on emergency first aid has been provided to the students.
With the activities of this new institute, students become optimist and feel that — besides academic nobility, IDMVS will be able to ensure a safe future for Bangladesh through capacity and awareness building among the people against any natural or human induced disaster.
