The University of Dhaka on Saturday celebrated the 99th birthday of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children’s Day in a befitting manner.
Dhaka University (DU) observed the day with a series of programme including laying of wreaths, cutting cakes, discussions, cultural functions and children’s painting competition. Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the festivity through cutting a cake at a minute past midnight at the university’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall premises. Members of the university family led by the VC Professor Akhtaruzzaman, laid wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the early hours of the day. Later, a discussion was held at the university’s Teacher-Student Center (TSC) auditorium. The theme of the discussion was “Bangabandhu’s Birthday: Colour Spreading Lamps, Children will remain well in Red-Green Bangladesh”
Paying rich tribute to the immoral memory of Bangabandhu, the DU VC said that all credits goes to the creator of our nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the achievements of Bangladesh including the recognition of becoming a developing country. Prof Akhtaruzzaman urged the new generation to be connected with the ideology of Bangabandhu.
“There is a significance of announcing the day as the national children day. Simplicity and honesty are the best characteristics of Bangabandhu’s life.
These qualities were noticed at the early age of Bangabandhu. Our children will become good human beings absorbing the philosophy of Bangabandhu,” he said.
DU Pro-VC Professor Dr Nasreen Ahmad, Treasurer Dr Md Kamal Uddin, DU Teacher’s Association (DUTA) president Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal and DUTA general secretary Prof Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam, among others, addressed at the programme.
Apart from the festivities, prayers were held in all mosques and other places of worship in the university campus. A cultural programme was held at TSC auditorium at 6.30 pm organised by the Department of Music.
The Faculty of Fine Arts arranged an art competition at TSC cafeteria. Students from Viqarunnisa Noon School & College, Udayan High School, Engineering University School & College, Azimpur Govt. Girls School & College, University Laboratory School and College, Nilkhet High School, Agrani School and College and students of the university residential areas participated in the competition.
