Amid demonstration by students, the University of Dhaka has scheduled the exams for affiliated colleges.
Students of the seven colleges in Dhaka have clashed with police on Thursday during a demonstration at the capital’s Shahbagh. IK Selim Ullah Khandakar, president of the BCS General Education Association, told bdnews24.com that the exam dates were finalised during the Jul 18 meeting between DU VC AAMS Arefin Siqqidue and the principals of the colleges. Teachers of government colleges belong to the general education cadre of the Bangladesh Civil Service or BCS. Khandakar said that authorities of the seven colleges have started notifying students of the schedule on Thursday. He said that the master’s final exams has been scheduled for Sep 10, honours third-year exams Oct 16 and pass course first and third year exams on Nov 4.
The meeting also decided to hold the first-year exams of pass course and master’s first and final year exams for privately registered students between Jul 25 and Aug 29.
Seven government colleges-Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Badrunnesa College, Government Titumir College, Nazrul Islam College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Mirpur Bangla College-have been brought under the University of Dhaka in February this year. Academic and administrative matters of these colleges, which had been affiliated with the National University, hit a snag after the change.
On Thursday, students of the seven colleges blocked the key intersection of Shahbagh and started demonstrating. Police dispersed the students by lobbing tear gas shells and charging batons. Several protestors have been also detained.
