The Department of Social Services (DSS) distributed Tk 652.52 cr as allowances to 1.21 lakh beneficiaries under social safety net programmes in the district during the last nine years till 2016-2017 fiscal, officials said.
The DSS under the Ministry of Social Welfare distributed the allowances to freedom fighters, elderly citizens, disabled people, hijra, physically challenged students, ethnic monitories, widows, divorces and other beneficiaries of all eight upazilas.
Under the programme, Taka 56.93 crore was distributed to 1,312 freedom fighters and Taka 308.64 crore to 71,746 elderly citizens as old age allowances to assist them leading a better life during the last nine years.
Over Taka 76.40-lakh was distributed to 17,687 physically challenged people as monthly allowances while Taka 90.74-lakh to 1,406 meritorious students with physical disabilities as monthly sub-stipends during the period. Taka 37.50-lakh was distributed to 950 members of the ethnic minority communities while Taka 34,260 to 571 members of the hijra community people.
Besides, the DSS distributed Taka 116.46 crore to 26,960 widows and divorcees as monthly allowances and Taka 2.60 crore as grants to 520 patients for their treatments during the past nine years.
Talking to BSS, Deputy Director of DSS Abdur Razzaque said that the allowance distribution programmes were continuing for similar number of beneficiaries in different categories during the current fiscal year in all eight upazilas of the district.
“The beneficiaries are leading better life and many of them changing fortune through various income generation activities, small enterprises and businesses utilising the government allowances,” Razzaque added.
