DSCC`s canal recovery prog from Feb 6

Dhaka South City Corporation on Sunday announced that it would start its canals recovery programme in the city from February 6 from the Trimohini canal of Nandipara of the city. It will also begin campaigns to free the dams of the city from February 9.
“We will recover all the canals under DSCC from the grabbers and government agencies. If any legal complexity arrives, the government will help us surely,” said DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon, while addressing a meeting in this regard in the Nagar Bhaban.
Officials from several government offices, including DSCC, Dhaka WASA, Water Development Board and Dhaka District Administration joined the meeting.
Mayor Sayeed Khokon said, “To free the city from water logging the recovery of the canals is a must. We will begin the eviction drives from Trimohini Canal of Nandipara from February 6.”
He said, the DSCC will take help of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and other security forces in case of necessary.
The Mayor said, the dams are very useful for the people. But many dishonest  
persons occupied huge lands of the dams. We will recover them and return those to the people.
In the meeting, the Managing Director of Dhaka WASA said there are 26 canals in the city. Of them, seven are in DSCC area. But the Dhaka District Administration said, there are in total 11 canals under DSCC. They identified some canals divided into two parts and then concluded the numbers as 11.
The Mayor said with reference to the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner’s office, there were 11 canals under the jurisdiction of DSCC which are illegally occupied by individuals and organisations.
He said, the canals would be retrieved to free the city from water logging and the drives would be conducted jointly by the corporation, Dhaka deputy Commissioner’s office and Water Development Board.
Replying to questions, the Mayor said, “We get a directions from the Prime Minister office to evict all occupiers from the canals. If any political or other influential person tries to make obstacles in the way of eviction drives they will be shut up.”
Managing Director of Dhaka WASA Taskim A Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Mohammad Salah Uddin, DSCC Chief Engineer Faraji Shahab Uddin Ahmed, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore MK Bakhtiar, Urban Specialist Sirajul Islam and Exective Engineer of Water Development Board Rifat Jamil, among others, were present.
In reply to another question, DSCC Mayor said, “Many of the lands of the canals have been recorded as personal property. Many of them are now used by government offices. It is really difficult to recover those. But the government is determined to do it. So we may recover the canals.”
To keep the canals free from illegal people, awareness is a must, he added.
WASA Managing Director said, they will start to clear the waste from the canals from March to make them clear before the upcoming rainy season.
