Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has evicted around 400 hawkers and demolished a number of illegal structures on both sides of roads to free footpaths for pedestrians in Gulistan area.
The drive was started from Phulbaria area and ended at Golap Shah Mazar in Bangabandhu Avenue , Dhaka on Monday
Executive Magistrate, DSCC officials, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police and other personnel were with each of the two eviction teams, said Liton Hayder, SI of Paltan thana.
They used several bulldozers, hammers and iron
sticks during the drive, the police official said. Prior to the eviction drive, an announcement was made about the upcoming drive in the Gulistan area.
The teams evicting hawkers and demolishing illegal structures on footpaths faced resistance from hawkers, sources said.
Earlier, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said that eviction drives would be conducted from June 1 in a bid to keep city’s roads and footpaths clean for pedestrians.
The Minister said that the eviction drives will start from June 1 under ‘Clean Dhaka Green Dhaka’ project in South Gulistan area and from July 1, the operation will begin in the Farmgate area. The Minister says that after completion of the program, traffic congestion will be lessened.
DSCC Mayor Syed Khokon urged the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges to take stern action to clear the roads and footpaths of the city from illegal occupation.
