Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) with the assistance of Dhaka district administration on Monday started an recovery drive to remove illegal structures from a canal in Nandipara Bridge area of the capital.
DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon yesterday inaugurated the recovery drive aimed at reclaiming the grabbed city canals.
“The recovery drive has started to make Dhaka city clean and green at the instruction of the Prime Minister,” the Mayor said.
On the first day of the drive, the DSCC demolished several business establishments, including two markets of Zila Parishad.
Dhaka Zila Parishad, which is supposed to maintain public properties, including the canals, has built 52 shops under two of its single-storey markets around Trimohonikhal near Nandipara.
Besides, some 200 private individuals and institutions also own businesses on the canal.
Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, Bangladesh Water Development Board, Dhaka district administration, police and the Rapid Action Battalion coordinated the drive.
“The drive will be conducted from Nandipara to Trimohoni where 220 structures have been identified as illegal,” a district council (DC) official told The New Nation.
Meanwhile, the shop owners and local businessmen alleged that they had taken lease of the markets and paying for this to Zila Parishad for past several years.
They also alleged that the city corporation did not issue any notice regarding the eviction drive and suddenly launched it, resulting in a great loss to their business.
Abdul Jabbar, an owner of five shops, said he took the shops lease from the DC office at Tk 35,000.
Earlier on January 22, the DSCC Mayor had announced that he would retrieve all the 11 canals under his jurisdiction.
Other canals which would be reclaimed are: Segunbagicha Khal, Hazaribagh Khal, Dholai Khal, Khilgaon-Basabo Khal, Gop-dakkhin Khal, DND Bandh Bannya Niyantran Khal, Dakkhingaon Khal, Dholai Khal-2, Paribagh Khal and Shuvodda Khal.
