The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) kicked off its waste removal programme on Saturday as part of its plan to clean canals and Box Culverts across the city.
Some 74 tonnes of waste were removed from five drainage pits at Panthapath Box Culvert in the capital yesterday, according to the media statement.
ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, chief executive officer at DSCC and Air Commodore Md Badrul Amin, chief waste management officer, visited the waste removal drive and talked to reporters.
Earlier, with an aim to eliminate waterlogging
in Dhaka, the charge of Dhaka’s drainage system and canals were handed over to Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) from the Dhaka Wasa on 31 December last year.
“Soon after assuming the charge, we have started this waste removal programme as per the DSCC Mayor’s directives,” said ABM Amin Ullah Nuri.
“Following this drive, we will remove waste from Shegunbagicha Box Culvert,” he added, mentioning that initial cleanliness drives are under way in Manda canal, Jirani canal and Shyampur canal in the capital.
“We want to complete the removal of waste from these two culverts and three canals by March next and make the city free from waterlogging by April this year,” said the DSCC chief executive officer.
In reply to the questions from reporters, Amin Ullah Nuri said, “We have launched this drive based on our own capacity. But as the Dhaka Wasa was the authority to handle these issues before, we will take technical assistance from them.”
“As per the agreement we signed with the Dhaka Wasa to this respect, we will take their help for the next two years,” added Nuri.
