The eviction drive of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) continued for the fourth consecutive day on Saturday at the Sundarbans Square Super Market in the capital.
The DSCC has already evicted around 300 illegal shops and establishments from there.
On Saturday morning, the DSCC’s operation team began eviction drive again. Senior Executive Magistrate Muniruzzaman, Executive Magistrate AHM Irfan Uddin Ahmed and Executive Magistrate
Tanzila Kabir Tripa were present in the eviction drive.
Earlier, DSCC started the eviction drive at the Sundarbans Square Super Market on December 23.
According to the DSCC, there are about 979 legal shops in the market.
But an influential quarter has swindled crores of taka by setting up 753 illegal shops in parking lots, elevators and walking areas breaching the architectural design.
The owners of these shops, however, claimed that they have bought these shops paying lakhs of taka and also renewed their licenses regularly.
Many victims also alleged that they have given around Tk one crore to the DSCC to legalise their shops. Some cases filed over the issue are under trial. But the DSCC began the drive without getting any verdict from the court, they said. “We have trade licences and allotment documents from DSCC,’ said Shamim Ahmed, a shop owner of Sundarban Super Market.
Another victim alleged that local DSCC ward councillor and Awami League leaders were involved with the illegal dealing, adding that the traders should not be made victim for this.
Meanwhile, the legitimate shop owners of the market have complained that their regular sale has been dropped due to eviction drive with keeping the market closed.
Earlier in the hearing of a writ petition on December 16, The High Court bench of Justice Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim stayed the eviction of the shop.
Lawyer Fida M Kamal appeared for the writ petition in the court. DSCC was represented by Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Mezbahur Rahman Shuvo.
