Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) have taken different initiatives to mitigate waterlogging problem in the city.
“We have got success in mitigating waterlogging problem in city’s Shantinagar area. Now we have taken another project to mitigate waterlogging problem on Nazimuddin road,” Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Bilal told.
He said, “We got around 85 percent success in the Shantinagar project to mitigate waterlogging problem and have a plan to take another such project in Motijheel area.”
Bilal said that illegal filling up of rivers and canals surrounding the Dhaka city is the main reason of waterlogging in the city. The drive would be extended for recovering illegal occupied rivers and canals after coordinating Dhaka WASA and District Administration, he informed.
He said DSCC cleaned up 310 kilometers drain during the 2016-17 fiscal year and built 239.15 kilometers drain. Besides, the construction works of building more 140 kilometers drain is going on, he said, adding a modern machine ‘Jet and Sucker’ has already been imported from Italy worth Taka 11 crore to clean up drain. Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Chief Executive Officer Mesbahul Islam said, “We have taken emergency initiatives to reduce sufferings of the city dwellers from waterlogging problem.”
To mitigate waterlogging problem the DNCC will conduct drives against the gravers who occupied illegally rivers and canals, he said, adding “We have already discussed about the matter with Dhaka WASA and District Administration.”
