It’s become a festive season for the dried fish processing workers in Karnaphuli area, south bank of river Karnaphuli comprising areas of Patiya, Karnaphuli and Anowara upazila of south Chittagong. Every morning raw fish comes through boat at the ghat where workers are waiting to receive the cages full of fishes. Various types of fishes are available here, like Chhuri, Loitya, Rupchanda and many more.
A group of workers dumps the waste part of the fish. Another group sprinkles salt over the fishes and let them dry under the sun. After drying for two to three days in severe sun, they put the fishes into the packet again. After drying the fish, local and wholesale traders buy the dried fishes at a wholesale price.
The wholesale price of Rupchanda per kg is Tk 2,000. In addition, dried Chhuri are sold at Tk 500, Loitya at Tk 250 to 300, Faissha at Tk 100 to 120. Kala Mia, owner of the Kala Mia store, said that many foreign traders pre-order the dried Rupchanda, Loitya and Chhuri fish. Besides, local traders also buy fish at wholesale prices from the ghat of Karnaphuli. No chemical is used during the processing of the dried fish.
All the fish products are poison free. Md Nurunnabi Chowdhury, Sheikh Ahmed and Ayesha Khatun of Shutkipolli said that they had to sit idle during the rainy season. They become jobless for about four months. The dry fish processing remains closed during these four months. Their earning begins from October.
