Drug trader killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Marine Drive area of Teknaf upazila early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Md Rubel, 22, son of Md Siddik, resident of Hneela Jadimura Jummapara. RAB said the young man was wanted in a drugs case.
Lieutenant Mirza Shahed Mahatab, camp commander of RAB-15, said that their team took position on the road around 3am acting on a tip-off.
“But drug traders opened fire on our team, triggering the gunfight,” Mahatab said. “Rubel sustained gunshot wounds during the skirmish.”
Later, he was taken to Teknaf Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Two RAB members were also injured in the gunfight, the camp commander claimed.
A locally-made firearm, two bullets and 10,000 yaba pills were recovered from the site.
