An alleged drug peddler was killed and his wife and brother-in-law were also injured in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) near the city’s Malibagh level crossing on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Iqbal Hossain.
Police Super Mohiuddin Faruki, Commander of RAB- confirmed the matter to media that during the raid, one lacks more Yaba pills, Tk 2 lakh in cash and a pistol loaded with bullets were recovered from the scene.
Based on information that a consignment of Yaba would arrive in Dhaka from Cox’s Bazar by a bus, a RAB team took position in the area, he said. When the drug dealers were shifting Yaba pills to a private car, the elite force members challenged them around 7:30am, Mohiuddin Faruki said.
At that point, the dealers opened fire on RAB members, forcing them to fire back in self-defence, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, the three drug peddlers were caught in the line of fire and suffered wounds, he added.
They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Iqbal dead, the RAB official said.
Three of RAB members also suffered bullet wounds in the incident, he said.
