A drug peddler was injured in a gunfight with police at Panchbibi upazila in Joypurhat district on Wednesday.
He has been identified as Aynal Hossain, son of Kashem Ali, resident of the Mohajon Colony, Panchbibi.
According to police sources, being informed of the illegal activity, police raided the Fixture Ghat area of the upazila at around 2 AM.
Sensing presence of police, the drug peddler and his cohorts opened fire at the police, who in self-defence fired back leaving Aynal Hossain seriously wounded.
During the gunfight, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Ratan and constable Almas have also been injured. They have been admitted to the Panchbibi Hospital.
Aynal was first taken to the Joypurhat Zila Modern Hospital. But when his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital at Bogra.
Police has recovered two-kilograms of cannabis and a shallow-Votvoti from the spot.
According to police sources, Aynal Hossain is a fugitive, jailed for four years in a illegal drug case. Besides, there are five drug-peddling cases against him with the Panchbibi thana.
