Amin Huda, a notorious ‘drug tycoon’ serving 79 years in prison, died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) on Friday.
Known as one of the first drug traders Huda played a key role in the spread of methamphetamine-based yaba pills in the country. He died at the BSMMU prison cell at about 1:00pm yesterday, said Mahbubul Islam,

Jailor of the Dhaka Central Jail.
He has been at the hospital for about one year due to cardiac and other complexities.
The authorities would hand over the body to his family on completion of post-mortem and other legal formalities, said the jailer.
On October 25, 2007, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Huda and his associate Ahsanul during a drive in two separate houses in the capital’s Gulshan.
The law enforcers had also seized around 5 kilograms of yaba pills, raw materials needed to manufacture the banned synthetic drug, chemicals and machinery and VoIP tools.
On July 15, 2012, the Speedy Trial Tribunal- 4 of Dhaka convicted and sentenced Amin Huda and Ahsanul to 79 years of rigorous imprisonment in the cases.
The court sentenced them on different counts of charges in two cases under the Narcotics Control and Special Power Act.
Huda had briefly secured bail from the High Court but the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court overturned the order sending him to jail again in June, 2013.
A nephew of controversial businessman Aziz Mohammad Bhai, Huda ran MB Multicare Limited, according to him.
The law enforcers had faced criticisms when Huda had been seen without handcuffs on his arrival in the court from prison. He had been allowed to smoke, chat, and walk on the veranda and enjoy meals with his associates during trial in the courtroom.
