The Directorate General of Drug Administration on Monday banned eight kinds of medicines used for human and veterinary treatment.
The Drug Administration in a circular signed by its Director General Major General Md Yusuf informed the respective pharmaceutical companies about the cancellation of the previously registered medicines.
The decision came after the recommendation of 253rd meeting of the Drug Control Committee, the circular said on Monday.
The four drugs now banned for human treatment are Rabeprazole sodium enteric coated pellets 8.5 % W/W PH grade 235.294 ml, Bromelain 50 mg + T 1 mg tablet Bromelain USP 50 mg + Trypsin BP 1 mg, Astaxenthin INN 2 mg and Astaxenthin INN 4 mg. The medicines banned for veterinary treatment are Ceftriaxone (sodium) (Vet) Injection and Ceftriaxone 0.25 gram USP/Vial, Levofloxacin Hemihydrate 10.25 gram equivalent to Levofloxacin 10gm/100 solution (10%) oral solution, all forms of vulture-toxic veterinary drug Ketoprofen and all forms of Colistin doses for veterinary treatment.
Following the cancellation of the registered medicines, the drug administration has directed the Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries and concerned departments to take necessary steps in this regard.
According to the provision 6 of the Drugs (Control) Ordinance, 1982, “The licensing authority may cancel the registration of any medicine if such cancellation is recommended by the Committee.”
