The High Court (HC) on Sunday summoned the president and general secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) to appear before it on Wednesday.
President Shahed Chowdhury and General Secretary Elias Khan have been asked to appear before the HC and explain their statement over Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud’s argument in a contempt of court case filed against Prothom Alo recently.
The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed issued the order as Mahmud drew the attention of the court over a
statement of the journalists published in two vernacular dailies. The statement described that the president and the general secretary termed Rokanuddin Mahmud’s remark as false, defamatory and vindictive and demanded withdrawal of his remark and seek apology for it.
Mahmud, during the hearing of a contempt of court against daily Prothom Alo on Thursday, told the HC that the journalists wrote in a way when they were given kickback, wrote in another way when they were not bribed. He added there is no organisation to control them.
During yesterday’s hearing, Mahmud told the court that the statements of the journalists’ leaders were a sub-judice matter, which was similar to contempt of court.
Acting on Mahmud’s statement, the bench also issued a contempt of court rule against the editors and publisher of Samakal and Naya Diganta for publishing the statement of the journalists.
Earlier on March 2, the HC issued a contempt of court rule on Prothom Alo for publishing an article headlined “Minute-e Ekti Agam Jamin Kivabe” (how an anticipatory bail possible in a minute) was published February 28.
Editor Matiur Rahman and Joint Editor Mizanur Rahman Khan of the daily have been asked to explain why the contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them for publishing the article.
