Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) will launch a special drive soon to recover illegal firearms before the start of the campaign for Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) polls.
The CMP will also conduct an operation to arrest terrorists and extortionists. “In the meantime, CMP has updated the list of terrorists and extortionists in all the 16 police stations of the city; so the special drive will be launched within a few days based on the list of the local ward,” said Banaj Kumar Majumder,” additional commissioner (crime & operation) of CMP. “The drive will be conducted aiming to control the law and order during the elections,” added Banaj Majumder.
As per the schedule, the CCC polls will be held on April 28, 2015. It being a local government body election, people from all walks of life will participate in it.
“Terrorists and extortionists try to influence such kind of election where attacks on polling centres and snatching of results and ballot boxes take place. So, considering the facts, before the star of the electoral campaign, CMP is going to conduct the drive,” added he.
“We are going to take actions against the criminals and terrorists so that they cannot carry out any subversive activities or violence at polling centres or make any obstruction to voters on the way to the polling centres. We will start the drive to hold a free and fair election,” added Banaj.
Delowar Hossen Mazumdar, President , Sachetan Nagarik Committee-TIB, Chittagong, told The Independent, “CMP has to arrest all the terrorists or drive them out of the city without paying any attention to political affiliation for ensuring free and fair elections. The administration also has to play their role ensuring neutrality.”
“The situation will improve, if police are able to lead the drive without being influenced by political parties,” hoped Delowar.
