Drive to free Jail Canal of Barisal city continues

The eviction drive of Barisal district administration in collaboration with Barisal City Corporation and Environment Directorate continued on Tuesday by demolishing illegally constructed structures on the grabbed lands of Jail Canal in the city.
Iliasur Rahaman, Assistant Commissioner (Land) said till this report eight structures evicted in last two days and operation would be continued. Kalyan Chowdhury, Executive Magistrate of Barisal District Administration, led the drive on Tuesday. Grabbers, grabbed different portions of six kilometer long Jail Canal and we started eviction drive to recover the grabbed land and resume navigability of the canal, AC Land of Barisal Sadar Upazila told.
Dr. Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman, DC of Barisal, Ranjit Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of Barisal City Corporation, Sukumar Biswas, Divisional Director of Environment Directorate, were also present during this eviction operation. Barisal was marked as ‘Venice of Bengal; by national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam for its canals flowing inside the city like nets. But now Jail Canal and Sagaordi Canal, only 2 out of 22 canals, announcing their existence in critical condition, said Enayet Hossain Chowdhury, one of the citizen’s rights activists.
