Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is scheduled to conduct a drive against illegal encroachment on the footpaths from September 20.
DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam announced this while unveiling the nameplate of Shaheed Zayan Chowdhury Playground at Banani’s Chairmanbari on Saturday morning.
He said, “The drive against illegal encroachment on the footpaths will start from September 20. We will remove the illegal occupation establishment from the pavement. It will start from Uttara and then will be in every area.”
“The illegal settlements are obstructing the roads and footpaths. So, people face immense sufferings to move easily.” he added.
He also said that such drives would be continued to keep the roads and footpaths of the city free from illegal settlements.
Seeking the help of the people to get rid of illegal occupants, the mayor said that eradication of illegal establishment is a challenge.
“I freed today and a vested quarter will sit here again tomorrow. We have seen such kind of incidents before. That is why we will start the campaign in one area and after finish we will start another area. In this way I can make the pavement free,” the Mayor said.
“I want the public’s help in this regard. I want public by my side,” he said.
Calling for pedestrians to walk on the pavements instead of the main road, the mayor said that now commuters are walking on the road because the footpaths are occupied. If the footpath is freed then you can no longer walk along the road. Then you have to walk through the pavements.”
“I spoke to the Prime Minister about this matter. She welcomed this initiative,” he added. Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Ward Commissioners of DNCC were present on the occasion.
