Drive to build up kidney awareness

A voluntary organization namely Kidney Awareness Monitoring and Prevention Society (KAMPS) organized a roundtable meeting styled “Kidney Health for All: Mass Awareness is needed”, at the National Press Club in the capital to mark the World Kidney Day-2015 on Saturday.
Considering the harmfulness of the kidney diseases, speakers urged the government to take special program to raise awareness among people to prevent the disease across the country. When the government and private sector organizations cannot be able to treat 5 percent of Kidney patients, but it is possible to prevent at least 60 percent kidney diseases only through raising awareness among people in the SAARC countries including Bangladesh, said the speakers in the roundtable.
They observed that it needs not spending money rather only to bring some changes in day-to-day life and practicing them very strictly.
Eminent lawyer and former Attorney General, Barrister Rafiqul Haque, Editor of the Daily Sun MD Jamilur Rahman, President of Bangladesh Renal Association, Prof Dr Muhammad Rafiqul Alam, renowned cricketer and former skipper of national cricket team, Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu, Managing Director of JMI Group, Md Abdur Razzak, BTMA Director Md. Abdul Mannan and TV Presenter Dr Shakhawat Hossain Sayantha, Director of NIKDU, Prof Dr Shamim Ahmed and Prof Dr Golam Moinuddin attended the roundtable meeting as panel discussants. Barrister Rafiqul Haque said there have no alternative to government’s patronization in easing the kidney treatment for poor and general people as the treatment of this disease is highly expensive one.
Calling upon the government to come forward in this regard, Barristar Rafiqul Haque said side by side the government; the affluent class of people of the society will also have to think of the poor class patients of the country.
Praising KAMPS role in raising awareness among people for preventing the kidney disease, he said KAMPS has been playing pioneering role in awareness raising and prevention works across the country.
Editor of the Daily Sun, Md. Jamilur Rahman said that what the experts say about the kiedny disease is fearsome. So people should be aware in this regard timely so as to they can be free from risk.
“Newspapers usually lay importance on political issues, economic issues, entertainment etc and like to cover the negative things of health sector whereas many positive and philanthropic works are done which is also should come under coverage” he said,
He assured that he will try to publish positive and public-welfare oriented things done in the health sector in the newspaper of the EWMGL.
Managing Director of JMI, Md. Abdur Razzak said the businessmen only think of business ¾ its true, but it’s also a fact that there lies hidden welfare in every sorts of business.
“Kidney treatment is expensive but there is hope that currently many related items including fluid, syringe, fistula needle etc. are being produced in the country. As a result the cost will automatically come down in the near future”, he added.
KAMPS Chairman Prof MA Samad presented the keynote paper. He said, the risk of kidney disease can be prevented only through raising awareness among people. He highlighted eight golden points for prevention of kidney disease which are giving physical labour and doing regular exercise, controlling high blood pressure and diabetes, testing blood pressure regularly for controlling hidden HBP, taking hygienic food and keeping weight under control, drinking sufficient water, not taking any drug without doctor’s prescription and kidney screening regularly.
He said, by following these eight golden ways strictly the risk of kidney diseases in people of all ages will be remarkably reduced.
He also said, this year the theme of the World Kidney Day-2015 is ‘Kidney Health for All’. People have to know the reasons of kidney diseases and take measures to keep themselves free from the risk.
“Diabetes, HBP, Glumeralo Nephritis, Obstruction in Urine Flow, Enlarged prostate, narrowing urinary track and taking drugs over the counter, smoking etc are vital reason for kidney diseases”, he added.
At least two crore of people are affected by some kind of kidney related diseases, at least 5 people die every hour from kidney related diseases. Therefore, this disease is harmful and as it is highly expensive for treatment, 5 percent of people cannot bear the cost of treatment.
