UNB, Dhaka :
The government is going to conduct mobile court drives at the chain shops and kitchen markets in the capital aiming to ensure the use of jute bags in packing food stuff and farm produces.
The Textiles and Jute Ministry has asked the deputy commissioner of Dhaka to take necessary steps in this regard in order to continue the success achieved in implementing the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010, said a ministry order on Thursday. Noting that the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act made the use of jute bags in packing six items-paddy, rice, wheat, maize, fertiliser and sugar-mandatory, the order said the
super shops in the city, however, are not using the jute bags in wrapping such things. Besides, there is a slack in implementing the law in packing rice in wholesale shops at different kitchen markets. Under such circumstances, the government has decided to conduct the mobile court drives. Earlier, the government conducted a seven-day drive across the country from 30 November, 2015 to ensure the use of jute bags in packing.
On March 6 last, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina distributed crests to 41 individuals, who played a pivotal role in implementing the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010, in 11 categories. The law clearly stipulates that all the traders as well as the government organisations concerned should use jute bags while packing six food stuff and farm produces-paddy, rice, wheat, maize, fertiliser and sugar.
