BCG gets two new ships: Drive against smugglers to continue

The drive against smugglers and pirates by Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) is going to get momentum as two new ships CGS Sayed Nazrul and CGS Tajuddin joined its fleet recently.
The two new ships were added with BCG fleet by the initiative of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for intensifying the raids at sea and seaside areas as well as on the waterways of Bangladesh.
The authorities concerned are hoping that “The ships CGS Sayed Nazrul and CGS Tajuddin will increase the capacity of BCG and will be used for controlling the smuggling and human trafficking through the sea route. On January 12, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina commissioned two ships at BAF Zahurul Haque Base of Bangladesh Air Force at Patenga in the port city. She handed over the commissioning certificates to the captains of two new ships.
Captain M Saleh Uddin, the captain of CGS Sayed Nazrul and Captain M Hasan Tarique Mondol, the captain of CGS Tajuddin received the commission from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on behalf of the ships.
Addressing commissioning function as chief guest at the BAF Zahurul Haque Base of Bangladesh Air Force at Patenga in the port city, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hoped that BCG would discharge their duties to control the smuggling on waterways as well as control the militancy in Bangladesh. She said, “BCG is doing well with the shortage of manpower and equipment to save the coastal belt and waterways. Presently, the BCG is the symbol of trust at the coastal belt of Bangladesh by their devotion and sincerity.”
She said, “In the past years, the activities of BCG for giving safety of the ships on the waterways were appreciated by the international organizations.
 Now, the Chittagong port is going to be a safe port by the efforts of all sectors including BCG. Chittagong port, the prime sea port of Bangladesh has got the affiliation as a safe port by International Maritime Bureau (IMO).”
She appreciated BCG for controlling smuggling of contraband items through waterways and maritime territory and checking illegal fishing at sea and rivers of Bangladesh. On the other hand, Captain Shahidul Islam, Commander of BCG Eastern Zone said, BCG is trying to control the smuggling of drugs through the inland waterways and international maritime ways in the territory of Bangladesh. BCG recovered 44.21 lakh pieces of yaba in last 10 months.
It may be mentioned that on November 02 last year, the two new ships were included in the BCG ships. The BCG procured the ships at a cost of Tk 996 cr from Italy. The ships started from Italy on September 3 and reached at Chittagong port on November 2 last year.
