The government will launch a countrywide drive from December 1 next to stop the use of polythene bags or sacks in packaging aiming to boost the use of jute products, said State Minister for Textiles and Jute Mirza Azam on Wednesday.
He also said the monitoring will be strengthened to effectively enforce the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010.
“Adequate supply of jute sacks must be ensured to implement the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010,” he told a meeting at the Secretariat.
Apart from the use of jute products and packets, the
junior minister said, plastic and polythene use needs to be stopped to check environmental pollution.
He said Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BGMC) should play the key role in ensuring the supply of jute sacks across the country and implementation of the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010.
Textiles and Jute secretary Farid Uddin Ahmad Patwari, additional secretary Mishbaul Islam, BGMC chairman (retd) Humayun Khalid and director general of Jute Directorate M Moazzem Hossain were, among others, present at the meeting.
