Master of a dredger engaged in dredging work of Mongla-Ghasiakhali water channel was beaten by an influential Awami League leader and UP Chairman under Rampal Upazila recently.
As a mark of protest of the incident masters and other staff of all the 9 dredgers engaged in the dredging works of the channel suspended the dredging wok for long 6 hours from 10 am to 6 pm on Tuesday.
In this connection police arrested Md. Rafiqul Islam Babul, UP chairman of Perikhali under Rampal Upazila in Bagerhat district.
Sources said, on the day at about10-30 am Md. Rafiqul Islam Babul, Chairman of Perikhali Union Parishad under Rampal Upazila in the district and his associates raided a BIWTA dredger bearing No. D-1420-02 engaged in dredging of Mongla-Ghasiakhali water channel, made a quarrel with its master Shahjahan, rebuked him in filthy language and at one stage he (UP Chairman) beat him (the master) seriously.
In this connection the concerned authorities of the dredgers registered a case with Rampal PS and about 2 pm a police squad led by Md. Rafiqul Islam, Officer-in-charge of the PS rushed to the spot, arrested UP Chairman Rafiqul Islam Babul from the dredger and took him to the PS. After holding a number of dialogues between the authorities of the dredgers and the administration and with the timely interference taken by the Divisional Commissioner of Khulna and BIWTA authorities the staff of the dredgers resumed their works at 6 pm. But in spite of that a strong resentment has been prevailing among the staff of the dredgers and the employees of BIWTA. Police were deployed at the different dredging points of the channel for the security.
In this connection Commodore Mozammel Haq, Chairman of BIWTA told the newsmen, being informed of the matter Divisional Commissioner of Khulna was directed to take necessary action. Nizanul Haq Molla, Police Super of Bagerhat told, UP Chairman Rafiqul Islam Babul who was involved in the matter was taken to the police custody for interrogation.
Shahjahan, Master of the dredger lodged a case with Rampal PS as the plaintiff in connection with the incident, according to a latest report received here.
Thana police handed over UP Chairman to the district DB police at night for the sake of security.
