A dredger owner has been fined Tk. 100,000 and another worker has been jailed for one month for illegally extracting sand from the Dhaleshwari River in Dergram area of Manikganj Sadar Upazila. Besides, 6 dredgers were seized and 4,000 meters of dredger pipes were destroyed.
The verdict was handed down by a mobile court on Tuesday (July 13th). Manikganj Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Taslima Shirin conducted the operation.
Taslima Shirin said seven dredgers have been seized and pipes destroyed under the BaluMahal and Soil Management Act.
He added that two dredger workers were detained during the operation. Russell Mia, the owner of a dredger, was fined Tk. one lakh. Another dredger worker Sabuj Mia was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for failing to pay the fine.
Hundreds of riverbanks are under threat as a result of dredging.
