The draft bill of the proposed amendment to the Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Act-2000 (Women and Children Repression Prevention Act-2000) will be tabled at the Cabinet meeting today for approval.
An official of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs said it anonymously.
According to the Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Daman Act (Women and Children Repression Prevention Act)-2000, life imprisonment is the highest punishment for rape. Government is going to take decision amid protests against the growing incidents of rape, sexual harassment and violence against women continued over the country.
However, Law Minister Anisul Haque on Thursday said that a proposal on the death penalty for rapists would be placed before the next cabinet meeting.
“The law is being amended to incorporating the death penalty as the maximum punishment for rape, which will be placed before the next cabinet meeting,” he said.
The decision was made following the instructions of the Prime Minister, the minister added.
He further said, basically amendment will be taken at existing laws section 9(1) where has been said life imprisonment punishment for rape. Few limited scale amendment will happen in existing laws.
Recently, the rape incidents have increased across the country. A video clip went viral on the social networking site which occured on September 4 at Begumganj upazila of Noakhali district.
A nationwide outrage has begun condemning these incidents. Protests against the growing incidents of rape, sexual harassment and violence against women continue for days together.
People took to the streets and social networking sites to register their strong protests. Women blacked out their FB profile photos condemning the incidents of violence against women. Some male FB users also joined the protest programme.
Protesting the incidents, from all walks of life, including students, across the country staged demonstrations demanding capital punishment for the rapists.
Thousands of people and leaders and activists from different student organisations took to the streets in capital Dhaka and elsewhere across the country protesting against the growing incidents of rape, sexual harassment and violence against women for the fifth day on Friday.
The protesters, including general people and students from different educational institutions, continued their protest under the banner of “Dhorshon O Bicharhinotar Biruddhe Bangladesh” (Bangladesh against rape and impunity) gathered at Shabagh intersection to protest against the rape incident.
To protest the incident, Chhatra Odhikar Parishad also organised a similar rally in front of the Jatiya Press Club the same day.
The protesters announced, they will march from Dhaka to Noakhali on October 16 and a grand rally will be held there on October 17 to press home their demands.
