Dr Yunus summoned by NBR

Staff Reporter :Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus has been summoned to National Board of Revenue (NBR) office on March 29.A letter in this regard has already been sent to Dr Yunus on Sunday. The letter was sent from Tax Zone-6 Dhaka.Earlier, on September 10, 2013, the NBR threatened to take legal action against Dr Yunus, if his alleged irregularities and abuse of power as managing director of Grameen Bank is proved correct. An official of NBR said Dr Yunus got tax exemption of Tk 13 crore after earning more than Tk 50 crore in honararium, awards and royalty. Apart from that, he didn’t take permission from the Grameen Bank’s Governing Board before going abroad as a public servant.The government also had made a move against Professor Yunus for his alleged tax dodging on his foreign incomes.The NBR in a report had showed that Prof Yunus earned Tk 50,61,85,588 in between July 2004 and June 2011 in honararium from 133 foreign organisations, awards from 10 organisations and royalty from 13 organisations.
