A new trust fund titled ‘Dr. Umme Salma Gold Medal Trust Fund’ has been set up at the Department of Urdu of Dhaka University (DU). In order to set up this fund late Prof Dr Umme Salma’s son Dr Anis Malek handed over a cheque for Tk. 5 lakh to DU Treasurer Prof Dr Md. Kamal Uddin on Monday at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Chairman of the Department of Urdu Dr Md. Golam Rabbani, donor’s younger brother Dr Arif Malek and Acting Registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman were present on this occasion.
Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student, who will secure the first position in the Honors Final Examination of the Department of Urdu, will be awarded ‘Dr. Umme Salma Gold Medal’.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Arefin Siddique thanked the donor for setting up this Trust Fund at Dhaka University and hoped that students would be benefited and encouraged by this donation.
It may be mentioned that late Prof. Dr. Umme Salma was a brilliant teacher of the Department of Urdu of DU.
She was born in 1947 and died in 2008. She was the wife of late Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Malek, a former Professor of Dhaka Medical College (DMC).
