Weekend Plus Report :
A public lecture on ‘Feminism and Contemporary Global Politics’ was held at Bishwo Shahitto Kendro in the city’s Banglamotor area recently. The lecture was delivered by the anti-racist Feminist Dr Sunera Thobani.
Dr Sunera Thobani is Associate Professor at the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at the University of British Columbia.
Her research focuses on critical race, postcolonial and feminist theory, globalization, citizenship, migration, Muslim women, the war on terror, and media.
Her book ‘Exalted Subjects’ places new emphasis on the question of indigenism, race and citizenship within the context of Canada, and makes it clear that modern nation-states are fundamentally based on violence and relations of power. Her article ‘White Wars’ in the journal Feminist Theory is a critique of Western modes of feminism that work within the structure of white supremacy. The programme was jointly organised by Chintaa Study Circle and Narigrantha Prabartana. n
