Mystery shrouds over the death of Kurmitola General Hospital’s intern doctor Sirajum Monira Soma whose body was found inside her rented flat in the capital’s Khilkhat area on January 25.
Soma and Dr SM Rakibul Azad, another intern doctor of that hospital, have been living together in the flat since March last year, police said. Police arrested Rakibul following a case filed by Soma’s father next day with Khilkhat Police Station. Rakibul is now on a three-day remand.
Police said that relationship developed between Soma and Rakibul when they doing intern in the same hospital. Rakibul was in the house when the incident happened.
Family claimed that Rakibul has killed their daughter.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (Gulshan division) Sudip Kumar Chakraborty told The New Nation that the arrested Rakibul claimed Soma and he got marriage following Islamic rituals but not registered their marriage. He also claimed that Soma committed suicide with having sedative pill. But police found her hand, leg and neck tied with scotch tape.
They are in misty that if Soma had taken pill, then how would possible to have it tied her hand, leg and neck with scotch tape. Police was informed around 5 hours later of the incident. Then in the mean time what was doing Rakibul there, he added.
Although both are doctors, their room has been so dirty. They primarily suspected that they might take drug, but it is not clear, the official said.
However, we are waiting for the autopsy report and the investigation is going on, he said.
Deceased father Ataur Rahman told The New Nation that Soma was elder than his two other children-one daughter and a brother. Ataur is Rajshahi’s Charghat Upazila’s Deputy Assistant officer of Department of Livestock Services and his wife Hosne Ara is a school teacher of Rajshahi. So they used to live in Rajshahi.
Soma passed MBBS from a medical college in China. Now she was doing an internship at Kurmitola General Hospital since March last year.
