Jatiya Oikyafront Convener and Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain’s motorcade was attacked at the Martyred Intellectuals Mausoleum in Mirpur of Dhaka on December 14 on Friday morning.
The motorcade came under the attack when Dr Kamal was leaving the Mausoleum after paying tributes to the Martyred Intellectuals around 9:45am, Latiful Bari Hamim, a staff of the Oikyafront’s media wing, told The New Nation.
However, Dr Kamal was unhurt.
Kamal Hossain was accompanied by some top leaders, including Gonoshasthya Kendra Trusty Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, BNP leader Abdus Salam and Reza Kibria, son of slain former Awami League Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria, and others went to the Martyred Intellectuals Mausoleum on the occasion of the Martyred Intellectuals’ Day yesterday.
At least 12 leaders and activists from the Oikyafront, including Syed Abu Bakar Siddique Saju, a ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ candidate from Dhaka-14, and the driver of ASM Abdur Rab’s car, were injured in the attacks.
About seven cars, including those of Oikyafront allies ASM Abdur Rab and Jaglul Haider Afrik, were vandalised in the attacks. Some supporters of local Awami League candidate for Dhaka-14 Aslamul Haque equipped with rods and sticks attacked Kamal Hossain’s car, Hamim said.
Selimuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Darussalam Police Station, said police rushed to the spot sensing untoward situation but did not find anyone in the area.
When a reporter questioned Dr Kamal Hossain about his association with Jamaat-e-Islam under the election symbol of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ the Oikyafront leader told him not to ask irrelevant question on the Intellectual Martyrdom compound. But when the reporter stressed on his question, Dr Kamal advised him to keep quiet.
