Observing that the country is now in a ‘deadlock’, Gono Forum president Dr Kamal Hossain stressed the need for forging a national unity to get over the crisis. Addressing a press briefing at his Bailey Road residence in the city, the noted jurist further said the unity is needed for the greater development of the country. The press briefing was held after a meeting of several politicians and civil society members, including Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president ASM Abdur Rab, Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna and Ganatantrik Ainjibi Samiti president Subrata Chowdhury. Dr Kamal said all the citizens along with the organizations of women, students and workers, human rights activists and all the political parties should say it together that it is they who own the country, not any particular political party or person. “The government needs to realise that people seek peace, not violence.” Observing that the police are out there curbing the basic rights of citizens, he wanted to know, “Which law says people need police permission to arrange rallies. This authority cannot be given to the police….this is unconstitutional, he added.
