Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain and its General Secretary Reza Kibria on Sunday demanded the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other political prisoners before the Eid-ul-Fitr.
In a message on the occasion of Eid, the two leaders said, “We demand release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and all other political prisoners before the Eid.”
The Gonoforum leaders also urged the government to withdraw all the ‘false’ cases and to stop repression of the innocent people by the police so that all if them can celebrate the Eid with their family members.
Dr. Kamal and Reza kibria at the same time greeted the people on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
“The people of all communities in the country enjoy the Eid with their limited ability. This is our tradition and it’ll remain in the future as well,” the Gonoforum leaders said.
Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslim community, will be celebrated in the country either on June 5 or June 6 subject to Shawwal moon sighting.
Khaleda Zia landed in jail on February 8 last year after a Dhaka court sentenced her to five years imprisonment in in Zia Orphanage Trust case. The High Court on October 30 last year enhanced the punishment of Khaleda to 10 years imprisonment in this case.
Besides, a Dhaka court on October 29 last year convicted Khaleda and sentenced her to seven years’ imprisonment in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
