Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam on Thursday accused Dr Kamal Hossain and Barrister Amir-Ul Islam of shaking hands with Quader Mollah’s cronies.
The chief government law officer came up with the remarks while addressing a meeting organised by Bangabandhu Ainjibi Parishad (BAP) at Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) auditorium with BAP president advocate A Baset Majumder, also a former SCBA president, in the chair. Pointing at Dr Kamal and Amir, AG Mahbubey Alam said, “You’ve taken side with the anti-liberation forces who don’t want the trial of the war criminals. I’ve nowhere to hide this sorrow.”
He further said, “Please don’t shake hands with those pleading for Sayedee, following the path of Ghulam Azam and opposing the ongoing trial of the 1971 war criminals. Please don’t try to fish in the troubled waters and join hands with the war criminals.”
Recalling the framing of the constitution, the AG said Dr Kamal was made chairman of the constitution draft preparation committee while Amir its member.
At that time, they did not raise any objection about the induction of article 96 empowering parliament to remove Supreme Court judges, he said.
“Why now have they made a u-turn?” the AG questioned.
Backing the government move on the 16th amendment to the constitution aiming to re-empower parliament to remove Supreme Court judges, AG Mahbubey Alam claimed that it will be effectively protect the interest of judges.
Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Abdul Matin Khasru, A MAmin Uddin, Dr Bashir Ahmed, SM Rezaul Karim, Rabiul Alam Budu, Laiquzzaman Mollah and Hosne Ara Bablee, among others, spoke at the meeting.
