Dr Golam Rasul, a Bangladeshi civil servant, appeared among the top 2% of researchers most cited in the Global Top Scientists list, a press release said.
He has been recognised in two fields of science – environmental science and biology. In both the fields, his name has been included in the list of the top 1,000 researchers out of 161,000 from different countries.
Dr Rasul was a member of the Bangladesh Civil Service Administrative Cadre and later joined the International Centre for Integrated
Mountain Development (ICIMOD), a regional organisation based in Kathmandu, Nepal.
He is currently working as chief economist at ICIMOD and is involved in research in the areas of economics, rural development, regional cooperation, poverty alleviation, sustainable development and food, water and energy management.
As a member of the Bangladesh Civil Service, he worked in the field administration in districts and upazilas, as well as in different ministries in varying capacities.
Along with development work, he has been actively involved in research in the fields of agriculture, food security, poverty alleviation and rural development.
Dr Rasul has done extensive research on the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh and on transboundary water cooperation in the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna basins.
His research in shifting cultivation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, provides new insights and options for transforming cultivation through more productive agricultural systems and improving livelihoods of the poor people.
Based on his research on transboundary waters, he convincingly argues for cooperation that can bring mutual economic, social and environmental benefits, for both upstream and downstream countries.
