Md Joynal Abedin Khan :
Several dozens of demonstrators, including Dhaka University (DU) students and job seekers, are still in custody of the law enforcing agencies, an organizer of the quota reformation movement, told The New Nation on Monday evening.
He said, police have not released any protesters who were detained from Shahbagh intersection, DU premises and other adjacent areas during their pre-announced countrywide quota reformation programme.
The release of the detained agitators now turned into an uncertain phase as Roads and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said that tough actions would be taken against those who were found involved in setting up fire and vandalizing the residence of DU Vice-Chancellor on Sunday evening, mentioned the organizer.
He alleged that police have collected video-footage, personal data and some necessary information of leading-level organizers of the movement that already has created panic among the protesters, their guardians and relatives.
However, Maruf Hosain Sardar, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police claimed that the process of releasing of the picked up demonstrators has been started.
He also confessed that several dozens of detained men are now at Shahbagh Police Station. But the DC refrained from making any comment over releasing the detained men till filing of this report at around 9:30pm. In a query, the DC said police will take action against the trouble makers who were involved with vandalism and torching.
Contacted, Professor Golam Rabbani, Proctor of Dhaka University, told The New Nation on Monday evening, “We are giving the first priority of releasing of the students.”
He said the authority concerned will take decision about the students after holding an emergency meeting.
A mother of a demonstrator hailing from Nilphamari told our local correspondent that she is in panic as the minister said that tough action would be taken against them who were found involved in DU vandalism.
She raised question that police would take the opportunity of the minister’s declaration over the demonstrators.
Mohammad Raju, Coordinator of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrokkhon Parishad, CU unit, said general students responded to their call for class boycott. If any vested quarter turns our movement into futile, then they will strongly protest it.
