Downpour submerges Ctg city low-lying areas

Many low-lying areas of Chittagong city went under knee-deep water due to downpour and tidal waters on Wednesday.
The areas including Bakalia, Chawk Bazar, Kapasgola, Urdu Goli, Shulak Bahar, Badurtala, Sholashahar Gate No. 2, Bahaddarhat, Agrabad CDA Residential Area, Chandgaon, Katalganj and Mohammadpur were submerged, causing immense sufferings to the residents. A few vehicles were seen plying in the areas while pedestrians waded through filthy water overflowing from roadside drains.
Chittagong Met Office recorded 85 mm rainfall during 24 hours till 3:00pm yesterday.
Mushfiqur Rahman, assistant met officer, said Chittagong Port was advised to hoist cautionary signal no. 3. Alok Paul of Munshi Pukur area said water entered his house damaging valuables. “Water-logging is a common phenomenon in the area during the monsoon.”
Shahjahan Khan, a resident of Urdu Goli in Chawk Bazar, echoed him. He said the whole alley goes under knee- to waist-deep water whenever downpour occurs.
“Water cannot go down quickly due to poor drainage system,” he said.
Shaibal Das Suman, a councillor of Chittagong City Corporation also chairman of CCC Standing Committee on Water-logging, said it will take time to address the longstanding water-lgging problem.
“Many projects have been undertaken in this regard,” he said.
