Downpour again deluged capital Dhaka as water entered houses, business establishments, submerged low-lying areas and footpaths and flooded most of the city roads on Wednesday afternoon.
After dry spell on Tuesday and till Wednesday afternoon, the city dwellers experienced heavy rainfall
In the morning, the sky was bright but the commuters’ problems were compounded by waterlogged roads after the rain.
Roads in Mirpur-10, Shenpara-Parbata and Kazipara, Rokeya Sarani, Bijoy Sharani, Moghbazar, Mouchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Kakrail, Sabujbagh, Khilgaon, Merul Badda, Rampura, Motijheel, Shyampur, Demra and Dhanmondi areas of the capital went under knee-to-waist-deep water.
A number of vehicles, particularly CNG-run ones, went out of order on the streets due to water-logging. City dwellers suffered a lot in reaching their destinations due to the thin traffic.
The rain that began at about 5pm yesterday submerged most of the city streets and low-lying areas, creating traffic chaos all around. The city residents could not come out of homes on Wednesday evening after heavy rainfall led to extensive water-logging in various parts of the city.
Locals said water-logging was created in different city areas mainly due to poor drainage system. The stagnant water coupled with unplanned road digging disrupted city life.
They also said city drainage has almost collapsed because of renovation work on the drains and construction of flyover.
Vehicles were seen moving slowly on the streets and commuters got stuck in long tailbacks for hours together in different areas, including Kuril Biswa Road, Mid Badda, Rampura, Mirpur, Rokeya Sharani, Airport Road and Tejgaon, Gulshan, Badda and Baridhara.
Big path-holes and cracks which developed in the roads in the last few months due to indiscriminate digging have made roads unfit for plying of all modes of vehicles. And the rain made these roads miserable.
