The authorities of Dhaka University have not yet adjusted the transport and dormitory fees of 15,000 students for the closure of university due to pandemic with new academic calendar. Rather new fees are being realised.
Sources said the students paid their dormitories and transports fees for the year 2020 but suddenly the university was shut down due to pandemic.
Then the authorities said they would adjust the fees with the next ones in July 2021 but it has not been done yet, rather they are asking for new fees.
The students have to pay Tk 1,080 as transport fee and minimum Tk 500 to maximum Tk 2,000 for dormitory fees depending on quality of hall.
“I paid transport and dormitory fees during my admission just before pandemic. But now I have taken admission to next level of the course. But without any adjustment, the authority has taken the fees again,” Bellal Hossain, a student of History department, said.
Seeking anonymity, a student of Organisation Strategy and Leadership (OSL) Department said, “We paid those fees during the admission of 2019-20 sessions which was promised to waive later. But, during the admission of 2020-21 sessions, we contacted our department and the registrar’s office for adjustment, but they did not coordinate.”
However, according to students’ e-services management, the adjacent process of transport and dormitory fees will be finalized by the office of the accounts director. Contract with Mohammad Saiful Islam, DU acting director’s of accounts, said, “The students will get back those fees. A list of those students is being prepared. A draft copy has already been made. We are working to resolve it soon.”
“About 15,000 students will get their fees back. It is very difficult to adjust due to the complexity of students’ information. So, we will refund it instead of adjustment,” he added.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said, “Many students don’t want to get the fees back. Those who want to get their fees back, they will definitely get it. The concerned persons are working on it.”
