The activities of dope gangs, widely known as Ogyan parties, have been increased massively different places of the capital city ahead of Eid-ul-Azha to rob people of their valuables.
Around 200 dope members have been detained in several drives in the county last seven days.
The recent arrest of many gangsters and hospitalisation of some victims prove that such miscreants have become active in the capital city.
Police sources said the numbers of mugging and looting incidents have increased specially in city’s shopping centres and crowded places as the Eid festival is approaching.
Sources said that the members of this group usually get into CNG in the guise of passengers. Builds friendship with the driver. After that, after consuming drugs with tea or juice, They knocked the driver unconscious on the side of the road and fled with CNG. Later gang members collected a hefty from the owner.
On Thursday, Detectives in separate drives arrested about 59 members of ‘dope gangs’ from different parts of the city.
During the drive, police recovered foods mixed with sedatives and knives from their possession.
Additional Commissioner of Police (DB) Mohammad Abdul Baten confirmed their arrest in a press briefing at the DMP Media Center.
Among the arrestees, 16 were arrested by DB Wari zone, 10 by Cyber and Special Crime Investigation Department, and nine by Motijheel zone, eight each by Ramna zone, Lalbagh zone and Tejgaon zone of DB police.
After interrogation, DB learned that the ‘dope gang’ members developed relationship with people, targeted earlier, at shopping malls, cattle market, bus terminals and railway stations ahead of Eid-ul-Azha and requested them to have food fixed with sedatives, police said. Later, when the victim fell unconscious, they looted the belongings and fled, said police.
Earlier, as part of the ongoing crackdown against dope party gangs, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested 20 members of a doping gang from the city’s Lalbagh and Shahbagh area.
Meanwhile, all units of Bangladesh Police have been asked to remain alert to avert any unpleasant incident during the Eid-ul-Adha, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslim Ummah.
Police Headquarters has already issued a letter to the heads of all units and instructed them to be extra cautious for the protection and welfare of the people.
All units however, have already taken necessary preparation, including increased patrolling activities, setting up check posts at a number of strategic points under the jurisdiction of respective police units.
