AMIDST the growing concern over health hazard for the intake of dairy milk and dairy products due to the excessive presence of lead and Coliform bacteria, the High Court on Wednesday said that the companies and individuals responsible for adulterating milk and curd would not be spared. As safe food is a fundamental right of people, the HC warned the responsible companies are playing ducks and drakes with people’s lives and health. The most danger is children and kids are taking milk for fulfilling their nutrition gap and balanced grow up, while every sip of milk and every spoon of curd carries poisonous substances. The adulterated milk and food would ultimately make our children an unhealthy generation.
The National Food Safety Laboratory found the presence of excessive levels of lead and pesticides in raw cow milk, regular consumption of which may pose threats to human health. The study also found a high level of chromium in fodder and excessive presence of pesticides, antibiotics and bacteria in raw cow milk. Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) on May 8 submitted a test report to the HC and said it found harmful elements in most of the 190 samples of raw and packed liquid milk, curd, and fodder. Of the 96 samples of the raw milk tested, 93 had a total plate and Coliform counts above the permissible limits.
Regular intake of adulterated dairy milk and dairy products might increase malignancy and neurological impairment or brain functions. Skin problems are frequently seen including allergic manifestation. We know it is a punishable offence and it creates health hazards and can kill a human being, even when we forget everything just for business interest. Now to save ourselves and our descendants, we have to fight all together against these ill trends of adulteration. The government should also take serious action with tougher law against those culprits. We all should make aware of the general people about the serious health impact of taking adulterated food. Such sincere community resistance can alter the scenario and we need to do it right now.
