Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association (BDFA) leaders have demanded restriction on import of livestock from India and other neighbouring countries during the holy Eid-ul-Azha this year.
Besides, they have demanded allocation of adequate subsidies, electricity facilities, reasonable price of dairy products and fodders and sanction on import of powdered milk from Europe to save the sector.
Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association (BDFA) placed these demands in a press conference held at the National Press Club in the city.
On the occasion, a human chain was organised in front of the Jatiya Press Club. Chairman of BDFA Imran Hossain, General Secretary Shah Imran, Co-Chairman Ali Azam Shibly, Joint Secretary Nasim Ullah, Malik Omer, Member Fahim Ibne Julfiker, among others, spoke during the programme.
“This year farmers and farms are ready with one crore 15 lakh and 55 thousand of cattle for sale during the Eid-ul-Azha.,” mentioned Imran Hossain.
“We need strong guard against illegal entrance of cattle from the neighbouring countries in the interest of the local farmers and farms, ” Imran Hossain said.
“If the government provides us facilities like electricity and subsidies under agricultural scheme, then we can supply meat at reasonable price less than Tk 400 in the local markets and have capacity to do so,” he said.
“But the government have to ensure minimum price of milk and other dairy products in the local market. Price of milk at Tk 35-40 is not enough for the producers as price of fodders and wage of labourer are mounting high day by day,” claimed Shah Imran.
“Lower price of fodders, vaccines and field level assistance are required for survival of the sector and farm entrepreneurs of the country,” said Ali Azam Shibly, Co-Chairman of BDFA.
