Don’t give political responsibility to us, says CEC Awal

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said has requested all not to impose political pressure on them to work as a political party. We will support any reasonable decision which will be taken by political parties.
CEC made the comments at the time of a dialogue with National Awami Party (NAP) at the Election Commission headquarters.
The EC said in reply to a demand for proportional representation in the parliament for political parties that it implies upon the political parties to decide. It is not the responsibility of the EC.
CEC said polls time government is very important. We shall support it if you are reasonable. Earlier in the day during dialogue with Gonoforum, CEC Awal said polls clashes is a sign of equal contest.
“It also occurred on Wednesday which led to a child being killed,” he said.
He said often when the election results are close, conflicts arise. He added that in order for free and fair elections to be held, all political parties must come to an agreement.
On Wednesday, voting to 68 union councils, including local upazila councils, took place.
The Election Commission (EC) declared the election to be fair in a media statement after the results.
However, in Thakirgaon’s Ranishankail area, clashes ensued among the supporters of two member candidates after the results were announced.
Police reached the scene and opened fire in order to bring the situation and a child was shot dead. The CEC said that the country’s politics is in the control of the parties and not the commission.
He said that the EC’s power is just limited to a ballot box, where voters put in their votes.
He added that the political parties are responsible for maintaining the political culture of the country.
