TEACHING in primary and secondary schools at Haor areas of Sunamgonj and other flood affected districts has almost collapsed over the past one month, as young students remained grounded in their homes by flood water. Local roads to schools are knee-deep water and one can reach schools only by boat. In this situation poor farmers are rather using their children to recover as much Boro paddy from flood devastated field for family food stock instead of sending them to schools. Presence of students in primary schools in the vast areas of Hakaluki Haor and other low land in Moulovi Bazar, Sylhet and Habigonj districts is also very thin. Such loss in teaching is unthinkable.

A national daily on Tuesday quoting local Education Officers of Tahirpur Upazila reported almost zero presence of students in 45 government primary schools in and around three expanded Haor areas of Sunamganj districts. It has around 133 primary schools having very low attendance in a situation marred with devastation of paddy and fisheries in the field, road infrastructure and human habitat in most areas.

But it appears that the existing relief and rehabilitation efforts are too meager to help the people to come out of the deepening crisis. There is no tangible move how schools will be repaired and people will rebuilt their life. As per report rice for open market sale (OMS) in Tahirpur Upazila can only cover 1800 families at 20 kg per month as against 2.5 lakhs people to suggest the need for greater efforts to save the people.

Not just school, rehabilitate the Haor people as victims of corruption in government. Don’t give cash for more corruption.
